AEON Malaysia's AI Venture Moves From Transaction Segments to Life-Stage Profiling

AEON360, the data and AI joint venture of AEON Co. (M) Bhd and AEON Credit Service (M) Berhad, is shifting customer personalisation away from static transaction-based segments and towards tracking life stages across retail, mall and financial services data.

AEON360, the newly established data and artificial intelligence venture between AEON Co. (M) Bhd and AEON Credit Service (M) Berhad, is building customer profiles that follow life stages rather than fixed segments, drawing on information from the group's retail stores, shopping malls and financial services operations.

Miki Ong, general manager at AEON360, said retail personalisation had until now been built largely on transactional records, demographic information, segmentation, loyalty data and campaign activity, describing the new approach as a step beyond that.

She pointed to parents of young children as an example. A shopper who buys baby formula would previously be placed in a fixed segment, whereas the platform can track signals across the first 1,000 days after that purchase and identify related needs such as daycare.

Ong framed the shift as following customer segments and evolving alongside them, rather than simply targeting a group and communicating with it. Activity in financial services is viewed as a source of signals that retail transactions alone do not reveal.

The recommendation engine weighs transaction data, purchase frequency, engagement and preferences submitted by customers, rather than treating any individual signal as a conclusion.
