Tmall Enlists ELLE to Turn Its Fashion Category Managers Into On-Camera Tastemakers

Tmall has teamed up with ELLE on a video podcast lineup that puts eight of its fashion category managers in front of the camera as public arbiters of taste, as the platform looks to differentiate on curation rather than selection and price alone.

The tie-up covers three separate video podcast series. One is fronted by eight Tmall fashion category managers alongside ELLE, a second hands the microphone to independent fashion founders, and a third features Tmall's own category managers.

The content is built around long-form conversation rather than product listings. Guests are expected to discuss clothing at a more philosophical level, treating style as a subject worth debating instead of a set of specifications to be compared.

Putting in-house category managers on screen is the partnership's most distinctive move. A large celebrity lineup is something rival platforms can assemble just as easily, but elevating staff buyers to the status of industry observers — closer to curators than to sales staff — gives Tmall's recommendations and its algorithms a human face that is harder to replicate.

Working with ELLE adds established fashion credibility to the format. The magazine's editorial reputation is intended to lend weight to the platform's category managers as they step into a public role.

The long-form podcast setting also gives Tmall room to step away from the vocabulary of livestream discounts and product specifications, allowing fashion to be framed as culture rather than inventory.

The strategy addresses a question the platform sees as central to online retail: when every e-commerce site offers wide choice and competitive prices, what makes a shopper trust one over another. Tmall's answer is taste.
