Norway's duty-free trade joins spoof 'Great Again' tourism campaign

Norway's travel retail sector is set to join a humorous national tourism campaign with its own 'Make Norwegian Duty Free Even Greater Again' promotion, following US President Donald Trump's derogatory remarks about the country.

The duty-free push will run under the 'Make Norwegian Duty Free Even Greater Again' banner, using a rotating set of slogans. These include lines promising to 'flush out' the world's best duty-free bargains and to 'lift the lid' on special offers, alongside a separate tagline written for a Gen Z audience.

The promotion is tied to a broader Visit Norway campaign responding to comments Trump made at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan. The US President said he was 'not in love with Norway', described the country as a 'shithouse country' and said he did not want anybody from Norway.

Trump also linked his remarks to the Nobel Peace Prize, which this year went to Navi Pillay, a South African jurist and former United Nations human rights chief. The prize is awarded by an independent committee based in Oslo, Norway's capital, rather than by the Norwegian government.

After the award was announced, Trump said on social media that he had settled eight wars and therefore should have received the same number of Nobel Peace Prizes. The Norwegian Nobel Committee responded that the annual accolade is governed by the will of Alfred Nobel and is not influenced by political campaigns, media pressure or individual demands.

Norway's travel retail operators are now folding their merchandising around the national campaign, applying the parody slogan to airport and border duty-free offers aimed at arriving and departing passengers.
