AV startup pitches hit 81 in 2026 as AI fuels a second, larger wave
Early-stage investor Trucks VC has received pitches from 81 new autonomous vehicle startups so far in 2026, roughly two-thirds more than a year earlier and above the levels of the sector's 2016-2017 boom. The firm credits AI foundation models with making end-to-end AV systems technically viable.
Trucks VC partner Puneeth Meruva said the volume of new entrants has overtaken the frothy dealmaking period a decade ago, when autonomous driving attracted a wave of well-funded challengers. The firm specializes in early-stage investing and tracks inbound pitches as a gauge of founder activity.
The investor argues in a newly published blog post that the industry is in the middle of a second autonomous vehicle wave, this one driven by advances in artificial intelligence rather than by the promise of self-driving alone.
Meruva described the long-standing goal of the sector as moving from early AV architectures to a fully end-to-end system, a transition he called the industry's holy grail. Foundation models, he said, now provide the technical architecture that makes those end-to-end systems achievable.
Those models are particularly effective at generalizing across different environments and scenarios, a capability that could make autonomous vehicles cheaper and faster to deploy.
The pitch figures cover activity through 2026 and compare against both the prior year and the 2016-2017 stretch that defined the first AV investment cycle.
