New Documentary 'Scent of China' Traces 5,000 Years of Fragrance Culture

An eight-part documentary series explores China's fragrance history from ancient incense-making to modern aromatic innovations, premiering in Huzhou with over 100 industry figures.

The newly launched documentary 'Scent of China' aims to capture 5,000 years of Chinese fragrance tradition on film. The premiere ceremony took place in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, drawing more than 100 cultural and industry heavyweights to celebrate the exploration of how ancient incense-making has evolved into today's booming aromatic industry.

Each of the eight episodes runs 30 minutes and acts as a time machine powered by scent, tracing how fragrance weaves through Chinese civilization, culture, and aesthetics. The production team ventured into mountains, forests, and remote workshops to uncover the roots of Eastern perfumery.

Producer Zhang Bei described the project as both a cultural and industrial expedition. The documentary highlights industry standardization, branding, and global reach, capturing the metamorphosis of an ancient craft adapting for the modern consumer.
