Yili's World Cup Campaign Becomes Viral Marketing Success on Weibo

Chinese dairy giant Yili generated over 1 billion reads on Weibo with a World Cup campaign centered on emotional storytelling rather than star power alone.

Yili, one of China's largest dairy companies, achieved a viral marketing breakthrough during the recent World Cup. The brand's campaign, which featured rights to five national teams—Spain, Argentina, Portugal, France and Germany—focused on the emotional journey of fans rather than traditional player endorsements.

Yili designed its strategy around three phases: pre-tournament anticipation, nostalgia for stars like Messi and Ronaldo in what could be their final World Cup, and the post-final reflection. This approach aimed to position the brand as a companion to Chinese consumers' tournament experience.

The results were striking. Yili reported that its campaign hashtags, #FootballPartnersHaveYili and #710IsAYouthCodeOnlyFansUnderstand, collectively garnered more than 1 billion reads on Weibo. The latter hashtag reached fourth place on the platform's trending list, amassing over 100 million reads alone.

FIFA has projected earning US $1.8 billion from marketing rights for the 2026 World Cup, highlighting the intense competition among brands. Yili's campaign demonstrated that standing out in a crowded sponsorship landscape requires connecting with fans on an emotional level beyond mere logo placement.

The dairy brand's success underscores the growing importance of culturally resonant marketing in China's social media ecosystem, where user engagement can amplify brand messages exponentially.
