Despite lacking the ability to sweep floors, wash dishes, or complete homework, the Microduck has become the tech industry's hottest new gadget. The 25-centimeter-tall robot duck features a small pincer beak that can barely pick up a sock or a marker, yet it has captured widespread attention.
Within 24 hours of hitting the market at a price point of USD 399, orders surpassed 5,000 units—averaging one sale every four seconds. The waitlist now extends into next year, indicating demand far exceeds initial supply.
Much of that demand comes from the AI community, which has hailed the Microduck as a potential “Raspberry Pi moment” for embodied intelligence. The robot is fully open-source, allowing developers and hobbyists to program it using reinforcement learning rather than relying on pre-set functions.
The Microduck is developed by Pollen Robotics under Hugging Face and manufactured by Seeed Studio, an open-source hardware maker based in Shenzhen. This combination of accessible pricing and open architecture has made it especially popular among Gen-Z tech enthusiasts.
Its runaway success also points to a growing appetite for robots that serve as blank canvases for experimentation, rather than single-purpose appliances. Even with zero practical utility, the Microduck has captured the internet's imagination and sparked a new wave of interest in customizable AI hardware.
