Tesla Delays Volume Production of Cybercab, Semi, and Megapack Beyond 2026
Tesla has pushed back volume production targets for the Cybercab, Tesla Semi, and Megapack 3, previously expected this year, as rising spending on new products and battery capacity weighs on its finances.
In a second-quarter shareholder letter released Wednesday, Tesla disclosed that it no longer expects to reach volume production of the Cybercab, Tesla Semi, and Megapack 3 commercial energy-storage solution in 2026. The company had said as recently as January that all three would achieve that milestone this year.
The pullback comes as Tesla’s operating expenses and capital expenditures climb sharply. While revenue rose 26% in the quarter, the increase was not enough to offset the higher spending tied to developing a new generation of products.
To begin scaling the Cybercab and Semi, Tesla said it is focused on boosting production of its 4680 battery cells. The company has already built the first production Cybercabs at its factory in Austin, Texas, but assembly lines for the Semi and for the Optimus humanoid robot are still under construction.
Tesla also removed language from its first-quarter letter about Optimus reaching “volume production.” CEO Elon Musk said on a conference call Wednesday that scaling the robot would be “the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we’ve ever made at Tesla, because everything on the robot is new.”
Tesla did not explain why the Megapack 3 timeline slipped, but the delays reflect the company’s broader pivot from an electric vehicle maker to an AI and robotics firm, requiring heavy up-front investment.
