Taobao's 'Ugly' Product Sales Top 230 Million Yuan as China's Young Shoppers Embrace the Bizarre

Cumulative sales of "ugly" or "bizarre" goods on Taobao, Alibaba's e-commerce platform, have passed 230 million yuan (US$34.3 million) since 2020, as young Chinese consumers snap up quirky items for their humour and character.

The figure covers goods sold on the platform since 2020, the year Taobao introduced its Uglies Award, a programme created to celebrate creatively unusual products. Taobao did not specify exactly what qualifies a product as "ugly," according to the platform.

The second Treasured Uglies Art Exhibition, held under the theme "Ugly, But Mine," is taking place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, where the Alibaba Group Holding unit is based. The event occupies an area nearly twice the size of last year's inaugural edition and runs from Saturday to September 27.

"Consumers are not just buying oddly shaped goods, but the emotions, stories and self-expression they carry," said Hu Yu, project lead for the Uglies Award.

Hu said some buyers keep the items on their work desks, while others wear them to display personal style. "These offbeat designs help consumers connect with similar people and express who they are," Hu added.

Items that might once have been dismissed as unmarketable are spreading online as shoppers prioritise quirkiness and novelty over conventional aesthetics, drawing millions of young consumers to designs known for their humour and distinctive character.
