Stephen Chow’s ‘Kung Fu Soccer’ Lands Global Distribution Deal
Singapore-based Encore Films has secured worldwide distribution rights (excluding mainland China) for Stephen Chow’s ‘Kung Fu Soccer,’ the spin-off to his 2001 hit ‘Shaolin Soccer.’ The film marks Chow’s return to directing since 2019.
The long-awaited spin-off to Stephen Chow’s 2001 classic ‘Shaolin Soccer’ is finally moving forward. Singapore-based Encore Films has acquired worldwide distribution rights outside mainland China for ‘Kung Fu Soccer,’ which Chow will direct.
The film shifts the spotlight to an all-female squad, the underdog Emei team, as they blend martial arts with soccer in pursuit of a championship. Leading the cast are Zhang Xiaofei, known for ‘Hi, Mom,’ alongside Dilraba Dilmurat and Lay Zhang. Chow will not appear on screen, having largely stepped back from acting after 2008’s ‘CJ7.’
‘Kung Fu Soccer’ is Chow’s first directorial feature since 2019’s ‘The New King of Comedy.’ The original ‘Shaolin Soccer’ revolutionized sports comedy with its slapstick humor and CGI-enhanced martial arts, becoming a global phenomenon. The new film aims to bring that same energy to a new generation.
Encore Films’ distribution deal ensures the film will reach theaters worldwide, building anticipation among fans who have waited over two decades for a follow-up.
