Stephen Chow’s ‘Kung Fu Soccer’ Kicks Off in Chinese Theaters
The spiritual successor to the cult classic 'Shaolin Soccer' has officially arrived in Chinese cinemas, bringing an all-female underdog kung fu squad to the pitch.
After seven years away from directing, Stephen Chow returns with 'Kung Fu Soccer,' now playing nationwide in China. The film is a spiritual successor, not a direct sequel, to his 2001 hit 'Shaolin Soccer.'
The story follows the Emei Women’s Football Team, an underdog squad led by captain Shuangshuang (Zhang Xiaofei) and striker Yu Long (Dilraba Dilmurat). Under the guidance of mentor Xu Feng (Lay Zhang), the team blends traditional martial arts with modern football tactics to compete for the 'Supreme Invincible Cup.'
Fans can expect Chow’s trademark deadpan comedy, over-the-top VFX sequences, and an inspiring underdog narrative. The film also features a cameo from Wong Yat-fei, who played Iron Head in the original 'Shaolin Soccer.'
With a fresh take on the kung fu-football genre, 'Kung Fu Soccer' is poised to be one of the biggest cinematic events in China this summer.
