Sports Direct Opens Dublin Flagship, CEO Criticizes UK Retail Taxes
Sports Direct and Everlast Gyms+ have opened a combined flagship store on Dublin's Henry Street, replacing a former Debenhams. The CEO also used the occasion to criticize UK tax policies.
The new flagship spans multiple floors and combines Sports Direct's sportswear retail with Everlast Gyms+ fitness facilities. It occupies the site of the former Debenhams department store, marking a significant investment in Ireland's capital.
CEO Mike Ashley, alongside the opening, sharply criticised the UK government's tax regime, calling it 'anti-retail' and warning that high business rates and other levies are hurting the industry. He contrasted the more favorable business environment in Ireland.
The Dublin store represents a strategic push for the company in the Irish market, offering a large-format retail and fitness experience in a prime shopping location. The move comes as Sports Direct continues to expand its physical footprint despite broader retail challenges.
