Shiseido Discovers Ring-Shaped Collagen, Unveils AI Visualization Platform

Japanese beauty giant Shiseido has identified a new ring-shaped collagen structure in facial skin and developed an AI-powered platform to map skin forces, shifting anti-aging research toward preserving structural architecture rather than simply boosting collagen levels.

Shiseido has announced the discovery of ring-shaped collagen structures, which it has trademarked as “Ring Collagen.” The company claims these formations play a critical role in maintaining facial firmness by generating tension across the skin. According to Shiseido’s research, the rings create a contracting force that pulls against one another, producing a supportive network around the face.

Collagen loss has long been linked to visible aging. The global market for anti-aging products was valued at $11.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $26.2 billion by 2033, driving continued investment into new mechanisms of skin aging. The industry is increasingly focusing not just on collagen quantity but on how collagen is organized within the skin.

In collaboration with researchers from the International University of Health and Welfare, Jichi Medical University, and the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Shiseido also developed a technology called Digital-Skin Reality. This AI-powered platform creates three-dimensional visualizations of the forces generated inside the skin, enabling more precise analysis of structural changes.

The research marks a shift in anti-aging science from simply boosting collagen to preserving the skin’s architectural integrity. Shiseido’s findings could influence future product development aimed at maintaining facial shape and firmness through targeted support of ring-shaped collagen networks.
