Shanghai Fashion Week opens as a gateway for foreign labels eyeing China
The Spring/Summer 2027 edition of Shanghai Fashion Week opened on 8 October under the theme Renewed Radiance, with nearly 100 runway presentations and around 1,000 brands taking part. For overseas labels, the event doubles as a testing ground for entering the Chinese market.
Organisers lined up close to 100 runway shows and roughly 1,000 participating brands for the Spring/Summer 2027 season, which opened on 8 October under the theme Renewed Radiance. The programme extends beyond the catwalk to trade fairs, panel discussions and consumer-facing events.
That breadth is what makes the week useful to labels based outside China. A designer can stage a collection to establish a creative identity while simultaneously working through the commercial side of selling into the market, from sourcing and stockist fit to distribution.
Among the international names flagged in the official announcement was Los Angeles-based Nana Jacqueline. Labels from Italy, France and Denmark also showed collections while exploring routes into the Chinese market.
The week gives foreign brands a platform to explain their proposition directly to local industry audiences. A collection can be judged against the Chinese retail backdrop and set beside the designers and products chasing the same shoppers.
The value is not limited to newcomers. Established entrants can use participation to sharpen positioning, reignite buyer interest or widen distribution, with a runway appearance creating an opening for new conversations that the trade programme can then carry forward.
