Qatar Pins Tourism Recovery on F1 as Arrivals Lag by 30%
Qatar welcomed 303,000 visitors in August, up 6.3% from July, but total arrivals remain 30% below last year as the country looks to Formula 1 and other mega-events to revive tourism.
Qatar's tourism sector is still recovering from the fallout of the U.S.-Iran war, which began on February 28 and triggered airspace closures that caused a collapse in regional travel demand. Official figures released this week show the country drew 303,000 visitors in August, a 6.3% increase from July's 285,000.
Visitor numbers had plunged from a January high of 646,000 to a March low of 63,000 — a 90% drop at the height of the conflict. Although monthly arrivals are now edging up, the overall pace remains well behind last year.
Total arrivals through Qatar's land, air and sea ports reached 2.3 million in the first eight months of 2026, down 30% from 3.3 million during the same period in 2025. For context, the country received 5.1 million visitors in all of 2025.
Gulf Cooperation Council travellers remain the dominant source market this year, contributing 958,000 visitors, or 41% of the total. Asia and Oceania followed with 489,000 arrivals (20.9%), just ahead of Europe's 486,000 (20.8%).
As it did for the World Cup, Qatar is now betting on another major sporting event to drive a recovery. The Formula 1 Grand Prix is expected to play a central role in boosting visitor numbers in the coming months.
