Peaches Take Over Chinese Social Media as Summer Trend
Chinese netizens are turning peach shopping into a viral taste-test ritual, ordering mixed boxes of varieties to find the best summer fruit.
In China, summer has brought a surge of peach-related content on social media, with users debating which variety reigns supreme. Young consumers are ordering assorted peach boxes to conduct taste tests, turning fruit buying into an edible unboxing experience.
Water peaches, a soft and juicy variety originating in China, are a particular favorite. Grown in regions including Jiangsu, Shanxi, Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, they are known for being sweeter and containing more protein than apples, grapes, or pears.
Nectarines, also native to China and now cultivated across Asia and North America, are another summer staple. Called “oil peaches” for their smooth skin, they are smaller and firmer than water peaches but highly fragrant and juicy. In China, nectarines are grown in more than 20 provinces and regions.
The appeal goes beyond taste. Peaches are versatile in recipes, working in both sweet and savory dishes such as peach-and-ham sourdough or baked peach oatmeal. This flexibility, combined with peak seasonal quality, has fueled the trend.
