Palladium Opens Seagrass Nursery and Marine Lab at Ibiza Resort
Palladium Hotel Group has opened a marine conservation lab at the Grand Palladium Select Palace Ibiza, adding a seagrass nursery and conservation dives for guests as coastal hospitality widens its focus beyond coral restoration.
The hospitality group said the lab sits at its Grand Palladium Select Palace Ibiza property, where visitors can tour an on-site seagrass nursery and join dives to observe conservation work in the water. Palladium describes the aim as raising awareness of the island's marine ecosystem.
The move extends a marine conservation agenda that, across the hotel sector, has largely centred on coral. Seagrass performs a different set of functions: it filters water and traps the sediment that clouds coastal seas, while providing food and habitat for marine life.
Those services matter commercially as well as ecologically. Coastal resorts and destinations have spent decades advertising white sand and clear water to fill rooms, and white sand is in fact calcium carbonate that originates from coral.
Seagrass is also a carbon sink, storing as much as 18% of oceanic carbon, according to the material. Climate change, including rising ocean temperatures, is putting those systems under pressure.
Palladium's conservation work is still paid for by its foundation rather than through the group's operating budget, leaving the funding model separate from day-to-day hotel operations.
