OpenAI Smart Speaker to Be Priced at $300-$400, Report Says

New details indicate OpenAI's upcoming AI smart speaker will carry a premium price tag, with a distinctive design and materials.

The upcoming device from OpenAI is expected to carry a retail price of $300 to $400, according to details that have emerged around its design and positioning.

The hardware is described as donut-shaped, built for portability so users can move it between rooms, such as a kitchen counter or bedside table. It is said to be constructed from high-quality metal with a premium look, and will include unusual moving parts.

If the pricing holds, the device would sit well above mainstream smart speakers. Amazon's lineup, for example, ranges from about $40 to $240.

The product is seen as a way to extend ChatGPT's presence beyond screens, giving the AI a physical form in the home. However, smart speakers have historically faced profitability challenges, and a higher price point could add friction to adoption.
