National Theatre of China Serves Up Edible Immersive Play in Beijing
The National Theatre of China is blending Cantonese culinary history with live performance, offering an edible, immersive theatre experience in Beijing.
Guests are served a “Yanshi Set Menu” directly inspired by the tea snacks mentioned in the script. Actors weave through a garden setting mid-scene, and audience members read lines with the cast between bites, creating a participatory format that blurs the line between diner and performer.
The initiative taps into the rising “experience economy” in China, where audiences—especially younger consumers—seek photogenic, narrative-driven outings that are highly shareable on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu.
Immersive theatre has evolved rapidly across China, moving beyond traditional seated performances to include historic water towns and institutional stages. The National Theatre’s edible play represents the latest iteration, offering time-travel and escapism through food and storytelling.
By literally serving the script, the production aims to meet audience demand for high-value, multi-sensory entertainment that combines heritage cosplay, cuisine, and live art.
