Instagram restricts undisclosed AI profiles with new label
Instagram is updating its AI disclosure rules to make it clearer when profiles feature AI-generated people, and will limit the reach of accounts that fail to label them.
Instagram announced Monday that it will replace its existing "AI creator" label with a new "AI-generated profile" label and begin limiting the reach of accounts that feature AI-generated people without clear disclosure.
The platform said the new label is designed to signal to users that the person featured on a profile was generated or substantially created with AI. Under the updated policy, creators who do not properly label such profiles could see their reach reduced, while those who use the label will not be penalized solely for having an AI-generated person as their profile subject.
The label is not intended for every use of AI. Instagram said people who use the technology to edit photos, polish captions, create graphics, or make other creative tweaks do not need to apply the AI-generated profile label.
Instagram said the change comes partly in response to users who have stumbled across profiles that initially appeared to belong to real people, only to discover later that the person was entirely AI-generated.
The company acknowledged growing user frustration with profiles that seem human but are not, saying generative AI is becoming a bigger part of how people create online.
