Global Memory Shortage Hits MacBook Air Supply
Apple's popular MacBook Air is facing constrained supply due to a global memory chip shortage driven by AI demand, with delivery delays extending into September.
The global memory chip shortage, fueled by demand from AI companies, has now reached Apple's most popular laptop. Retailers say supply of the MacBook Air is more constrained than ever before.
On Apple's website, customers now face waits until the second half of August, and certain configurations will not ship until September. The shortage had previously affected Apple's more niche computers, the Mac mini and Mac Studio.
Apple is working to address the problem by raising prices and sourcing memory from Chinese suppliers, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The company also delayed its latest back-to-school promotion, which had been planned for June.
For the first time, Apple's marketing materials are placing greater focus on the base model of the MacBook Pro, and include a warning: "MacBook Air subject to availability."
