FDA Advisory Panel Recommends Six Peptides for Compounding Use

An FDA advisory committee has voted to recommend easing regulatory restrictions on six peptides, adding them to the 503A bulks list despite agency scientists citing insufficient safety evidence.

The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) voted after a two-day hearing to recommend adding BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOTS-c, Epitalon, and Semax to the list of ingredients approved for compounding pharmacies. This marks a departure from the FDA's traditionally cautious approach, which often requires extensive safety data over many years. For example, it took 25 years to approve a new UV filter for sunscreen.

The committee narrowly rejected another peptide, Emideltide, by a 6-7 vote due to lack of evidence. The recommendation does not give the peptides FDA approval or authorize compounded versions of products currently labeled "for research purposes only."

The decision could reshape the compounding, wellness, and beauty industries by potentially opening the door to wider use of these peptides. However, the FDA is not bound to follow the committee's recommendation, and final action remains pending.
