Chinese EV Makers Chase Affordable Humanoid Robots for Consumers
Nio's William Li says tomorrow's cars will essentially be robots, as more than 10 Chinese smart-vehicle manufacturers push into humanoid robotics using shared EV supply chains.
Speaking in March as he set out earnings prospects for the Shanghai-based carmaker, Nio chief executive William Li drew a direct line between the automotive business and the development of robots. He argued that the cars his company builds already embody the same perception, decision-making and control systems found in robots, with artificial intelligence underpinning all three functions.
Li's stance reflects a wider shift among China's smart electric vehicle makers, a group frequently likened to Tesla imitators, which are now pursuing a new mission: building lower-cost humanoid robots aimed at ordinary consumers rather than industrial buyers.
More than 10 Chinese manufacturers of intelligent vehicles have already ventured into robotics, drawn by what Li describes as synergistic benefits between the two industries. On robotics, he has taken what amounts to a latecomer approach, intended to avoid the large losses that can accompany early-stage investment, while remaining convinced the two sectors reinforce each other.
The main driver is supply chain overlap. Key components used in smart EV production, including cameras and radar, along with the software that ties them together, are equally central to robotics, allowing carmakers to reuse existing capabilities and supplier networks.
That overlap has been buoyed by the rapid growth of physical AI, or artificial intelligence applied to machines that operate in the real world. For China's EV manufacturers, the appeal lies in extending their engineering and manufacturing base beyond vehicles into consumer-facing robots at more accessible price points.
