Cartier Debuts in New Zealand with Auckland Boutique
Cartier has opened its first New Zealand boutique in a restored 1883 landmark building on Auckland’s Queen Street. The space combines Parisian luxury with local Māori and artistic craftsmanship.
Located on Queen Street, the boutique occupies the former Imperial Hotel, a heritage structure dating to 1883 that has been carefully restored. Cartier said the store was designed specifically for New Zealand rather than adapted from a global template, aiming to reflect both Auckland’s architectural history and the maison’s French elegance.
The interior features a hand-carved tōtara portal created by customary Māori wood carver Steve Solomon, described as a contemporary take on traditional carving that evokes movement, guardianship and the city’s maritime identity. Auckland artist Isaac Katzoff contributed hand-blown glass installations inspired by the tranquillity of the ocean.
The boutique brings together Cartier’s full product universe under one roof, including jewellery, fine watchmaking, bridal creations, leather goods, eyewear, accessories and fragrances. Private salons are designed to echo the warmth and natural beauty of Aotearoa.
The opening marks Cartier’s move from wholesale partnerships to a permanent owned retail presence in the market. The house said it recognises both the sophistication of local clientele and New Zealand’s emergence as a destination for leading luxury brands.
