Birkenstock opens Shibuya flagship with footbed-inspired design

Birkenstock has opened a new 90-square-metre boutique in Tokyo's Shibuya district, located on the ground floor of a newly built ten-storey building.

Birkenstock's new Tokyo boutique is situated at street level in a ten-storey building in Shibuya. The 90-square-metre retail space was designed by Tokyo-based architecture practice Atelier Write.

The interior draws on the brand's heritage of ergonomic footwear, translating the materials and forms of its footbed into functional design elements. A mesh display referencing the footbed's distinctive 'bone pattern' forms the main wall display.

Cork display shelving at the storefront echoes the cork used in Birkenstock soles and follows the footbed's undulating silhouette. Further inside, an undulating tiled wall with recessed display spaces incorporates a sink and metal shelving stocked with the brand's foot and body care products.

Birkenstock, founded in 1774, is known for its contoured footbed design. The new Shibuya store marks a direct retail addition for the brand in Tokyo.
