Western Sydney International Airport Readies for Passenger Launch with Curated Retail
The airport's general manager of retail outlines the ambitious retail and dining offer as the 24-hour gateway prepares for passenger flights starting 25 October.
Cargo services began on 27 July, marking the start of operations at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. Passenger flights are scheduled to commence on 25 October, and the retail team is finalising the commercial lineup.
General Manager Retail Glyn Williams said the airport is focused on delivering a sense of space and a wow factor through its retail and dining options. The first food and beverage partnership was awarded to Mountain Culture Beer Co, a craft brewery from the Blue Mountains, in collaboration with Airport Retail Group Australia. Further F&B announcements are expected.
In duty-free and travel essentials, the airport has selected Lagardère AWPL as the anchor partner. The Pacific region's largest travel retailer will operate 11 stores across international and domestic precincts, covering 1,900 square metres for duty free and 1,200 square metres for travel essentials and specialty retail, under the brand name 'Duty Free at WSI'.
Williams said the partnership was chosen for more than financial terms, emphasising the curatorial approach to the airport's commercial offer. The airport aims to create a distinctive sense of place, reflecting the local region while meeting traveller expectations.
The 24-hour operating model positions WSI as a key global gateway, with a phased ramp-up in services. The retail and dining strategy is designed to enhance the passenger experience from the outset.
