Song Yadong's path to the UFC Shanghai main event was forged far from China. After leaving home to pursue his dream, the fighter established Sacramento, California, as his adopted base, training for years at Team Alpha Male under coaches including Urijah Faber. That experience, UFC has highlighted, helped transform the young prospect into a more complete MMA athlete.

The 19-year-old who submitted Bharat Khandare on the preliminary card of the UFC's first Shanghai event nearly nine years ago will now walk into the same city as a top-10 contender. His opponent, Umar Nurmagomedov, is one of the division's most feared grapplers, representing the biggest test of Song's career.

Song's style is rooted in the technical reality of modern MMA—boxing, wrestling, grappling, and conditioning—rather than the tidy "Kung Fu Kid" nickname might suggest.
