Molly Tea's NYC Stores Rebrand as '? Tea' Amid Trademark Dispute

Chinese tea brand Molly Tea's New York locations are now operating under the name '? Tea' after a federal injunction forced them to remove all branding due to a franchise and trademark dispute.

Walk past any of the former Molly Tea locations in New York City, and the signage now features a giant question mark. The cups are stripped of any brand name, replaced with a hand-drawn '?'.

According to public court filings, the China-based headquarters of Molly Tea accused the New York franchise operators of breaching contracts and violating intellectual property. The parent company secured a federal injunction that demanded the immediate removal of all Molly Tea branding, trade dress, and logos from stores and social media.

Faced with the sudden loss of their name but retaining staff, leases, and inventory, the NYC stores made a pivot. They rebranded overnight as '? Tea' or 'Question Tea,' turning the blank slate into a viral mystery. The bold question mark has become a conversation starter, keeping the locations busy even as the legal battle continues.

The dispute highlights the challenges Chinese tea brands face when expanding into the U.S. market, where franchise and compliance laws are strict. For now, customers seem unfazed, continuing to order drinks like jasmine milk tea from the nameless shops.
