Lashify Founder Sahara Lotti on Building a $400M Business and Defending Over 800 Patents
Sahara Lotti founded Lashify after failing to get a lash extension appointment, turning a personal frustration into a profitable $400 million business. She now defends over 800 patents against copycats and advocates for stronger IP protection in beauty.
Sahara Lotti, founder of Lashify, built the brand from a personal need: she couldn't get a lash extension appointment and discovered no DIY alternative that matched professional results. Starting with a custom tool, she experimented with materials and learned that professional lash extensions are made from PBT, a synthetic silk that can be molded with heat.
Lotti's breakthrough came when she used a keratin fusion tool from Sally Beauty to flatten the base of strip lashes, creating a delicate band that could be applied underneath natural lashes. This innovation led to a product that mimics salon extensions without damaging natural lashes.
Lashify has since grown into a profitable $400 million business. The company has also built a robust intellectual property portfolio, defending over 800 patents against copycats. Lotti emphasizes the importance of IP in beauty, a sector she says is increasingly forced to take legal protections seriously.
Despite the company's success, Lotti maintains a pragmatic view of business relationships, stating that 'nobody's your friend' in the competitive landscape. Her licensing model allows the brand to expand while retaining control over its innovations.
The founder's journey underscores how market gaps in beauty can be addressed through material science and a willingness to challenge conventional product design.
