Hyatt Moves to Block Hilton's 'Select by Hilton' Trademark
Hyatt has filed an opposition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office against Hilton's bid to register the name "Select by Hilton," then agreed to pause the proceeding while the two hotel groups pursue a settlement.
The opposition was lodged on Monday with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Hyatt argues that Hilton's proposed mark conflicts with its own registered Hyatt Select trademark, citing that registration along with two pending applications.
Hyatt followed the filing with a motion, made with Hilton's consent, to suspend the case while the parties negotiate. The request puts the trademark dispute on hold rather than withdrawing it.
On Friday, representatives for both companies issued identical statements: "We have mutually agreed to suspend the action as we continue working toward an agreeable resolution."
Hyatt Select is an established flag within Hyatt's portfolio, with properties including one in Williamsburg, Virginia, where the brand name appears on exterior signage.
Open trademark challenges are uncommon between major hotel groups, which have expanded in recent years by stacking sub-brands and collection labels under their parent names.
