Amazon says 400 million shoppers have used Alexa for Shopping in past year
Amazon said more than 400 million customers have used Alexa for Shopping over the past 12 months, up from 350 million at the end of July. CEO Andy Jassy also said users of the conversational shopping tool spend 50% more than customers who do not use it.
Amazon reported fiscal third-quarter net sales of $201.9 billion, up 12% year over year, and used its Thursday earnings call to detail how its conversational AI shopping assistant is contributing to transactions.
More than 400 million customers have used Alexa for Shopping in the last 12 months, the company said, compared with 350 million at the end of July. Jassy said customers who use the service spend 50% more than those who do not.
The update came as growth in several Amazon e-commerce segments slowed. Amazon said much of that slowdown reflected the timing of Prime Day, which was held at the end of June this year instead of mid-July last year, moving related sales growth into the second quarter.
AWS segment sales rose 39% year over year. Online Stores revenue increased 2% from a year earlier, compared with 10% growth in the year-earlier third quarter.
Amazon presented AI shopping as a growth lever that can nudge shoppers toward more purchases as its broader business matures and growth in other areas becomes harder to find.
