Freitag Taps China's Bag Charm Craze with Blind Boxes and Recycled Tarps

Swiss bag maker Freitag launched bag charms and blind boxes on Tmall to mark its seven-year anniversary, tapping into China's trend for personalized accessories.

To celebrate its Tmall flagship store's seven-year anniversary, Swiss bag maker Freitag has introduced a new product line targeting one of China's hottest consumer trends: bag charms. The release comes as bag charms evolve from simple add-ons into a standalone category, driven by shoppers seeking to personalize their luxury and fashion accessories without the expense of a new bag.

True to Freitag's sustainable ethos, the bag charms are crafted from truck tarpaulin offcuts left over from bag production. This approach not only minimizes waste but also introduces new customers to the brand's circular manufacturing philosophy.

The collection is packaged in blind boxes, a sales format popularized by brands like Pop Mart that has driven extraordinary sales in China. Sold in pairs, one box contains a Freitag bag and a matching flower charm, while the other holds just the flower charm. Both feature randomized colors and designs, adding a layer of collectability.

Bag charms offer a more accessible entry point compared to Freitag's premium messenger bags, making the brand more approachable for first-time buyers. By using production offcuts, Freitag also educates consumers on its commitment to sustainability while capitalizing on a booming market segment.
