Emotional Connection Tops Logo and Heritage for Luxury Shoppers, Report Finds
A new report reveals that aspirational and established luxury clients, spending $5,000 to $50,000 annually, have been underserved despite representing up to $90 billion in potential growth. Emotional connection now outweighs logo recognition and craftsmanship.
Self-expression has become the defining driver for modern luxury shoppers, according to a new industry report. Both American and Chinese buyers surveyed said they now prioritize an emotional connection with a brand over traditional markers like logo recognition, heritage, and craftsmanship.
In China, brand desire is closely tied to visibility and confidence. Among established luxury clients, 33% said they shop to feel more confident, a figure that rises to 47% for occasional and aspirational buyers.
While limited availability and waiting lists have long signaled exclusivity, today's luxury clients are increasingly skeptical. Many perceive such scarcity tactics as marketing tools rather than genuine value indicators.
However, special treatment still resonates. About 40% of US luxury clients said limited editions, early product drops, and loyalty rewards create a sense of exclusivity. In China, buyers favor bespoke products and personalized approaches, especially among Gen X consumers who hold significant spending power.
