Eight Rising Chinese Musicians Redefine Mandopop in 2026
A new wave of Chinese musicians is revitalizing Mandopop, with artists like Jude Chiu, Leah Dou, and Matt Lv gaining recognition through awards and streaming platforms.
Jude Chiu, fresh from winning Best Composer at this year's Golden Melody Awards, has become a standout figure in contemporary Mandopop. After debuting in 2018, he built a following on NetEase Cloud Music, China's largest music streaming platform, before breaking into the mainstream via music competition shows. His 2021 album "The Last Aquarium" showcases a blend of lullaby-like vocals and theatrical songwriting, using water as a metaphor for vulnerability and change.
Leah Dou, daughter of Mandopop icon Faye Wong and rock pioneer Dou Wei, has forged her own path with a sound mixing dream pop, alternative R&B, and psychedelic rock. Her first all-Mandarin album, "Spring Outing," featuring the hit single "Monday," highlights her independent artistry.
At 24, Matt Lv is the youngest of the eight, having released original music online since age 15. By 19, he earned a Golden Melody Award nomination for Best New Artist and has set his sights on winning a Grammy before turning 25.
These artists, along with five other rising talents, are carving out distinct spaces in China's music scene, challenging the notion that Mandopop is in decline.
