Luxury Escapes Puts Its Best Partner Rates Behind a Paid Membership Paywall
Luxury Escapes is betting that a paid membership tier, with its sharpest partner pricing locked behind a genuine paywall, will hold customers as AI agents reshape travel booking. CEO Adam Schwab says the moat matters more as intermediaries face new competition.
The Australian travel company, founded in 2013, now serves more than nine million members across Australia, the US, the UK, India and Asia. It runs a loyalty program called Societe and layers a paid membership tier on top of it.
That paid tier is where Luxury Escapes places its best partner pricing, deliberately gated rather than open to all shoppers. Co-founder and CEO Adam Schwab frames the arrangement as a real paywall rather than a soft discount scheme, and as the core of how the business sells travel.
Schwab is blunt about the limits of customer ownership in the sector. Even with a closer relationship and higher switching costs than global online travel agencies, he says travel ties are easily broken, with customers frequently shifting platforms over price or inventory.
His answer is to make membership itself the differentiator. Schwab expects that barrier to carry more weight as AI agents begin handling bookings, giving a membership-gated inventory model an advantage over intermediaries that compete mainly on search results.
Schwab is set to discuss paid membership, partner pricing and the risk AI agents pose to travel middlemen at a commerce summit in New York on November 11, 2026, held at Apella by Alexandria.
