Cosmetic Chemist Laura Lam-Phaure on Solving Beauty’s Toughest Product Problems
Cosmetic chemist Laura Lam-Phaure, founder of LPB Group, reveals the most common technical challenges she helps beauty brands fix, from stability issues and packaging incompatibility to scaling problems.
When Laura Lam-Phaure picks up a call or opens an email from a beauty brand, it often signals trouble. The cosmetic chemist and founder of LPB Group has built a practice around troubleshooting product crises that range from formula separation and contamination to misleading claims and manufacturing defects.
Lam-Phaure says brands typically reach out when they are facing stability issues, packaging incompatibility, ingredient concerns, or even lawsuits. In many cases, a product may require reformulation or a recall. Her role is to diagnose the root cause and chart a path to resolution.
One recurring challenge is scaling production. A formula that works perfectly for 5,000 units may fail when production jumps to 50,000 units. Lam-Phaure notes that scaling can expose hidden weaknesses in the formulation, requiring adjustments to ensure commercial viability.
Beyond crisis management, Lam-Phaure focuses on prevention. She works with brands to catch potential problems early, aiming to avoid recalls or negative online reviews that can damage a brand’s reputation.
Lam-Phaure also observes a shift in the cosmetic chemistry profession. Older chemists often fell into the field accidentally, making creams by default. Today, she says, many aspiring chemists are driven by a passion for product and choose the career deliberately because they are obsessed with the science behind beauty.
