Beauty Brands Urged to Rethink PR Boxes as Creator Fatigue Mounts
As influencers grow weary of generic or over-the-top PR mailers, beauty brands are being pushed to create memorable, brand-aligned unboxing experiences that avoid environmental waste.
In May, Miu Miu launched its new gourmand perfume Fleur de Lait with a PR package designed to build anticipation and reflect the fragrance's profile. The box, housed in a cooler bag resembling an ice cream tub, contained kinetic sand ‘ice cream’ and a silver scooper to reveal the bottle beneath. The playful unboxing echoed the scent's notes of mango, coconut milk, and osmanthus, extending the brand's youthful identity.
However, not all beauty mailers have been well-received. In recent years, creators have publicly called out brands on TikTok and Instagram for sending entire shade ranges or using environmentally harmful packaging, such as mini fridges. These missteps can turn a marketing gesture into a public relations liability.
PR gifts, given without payment or posting requirement, remain a valuable tool for building awareness and long-term relationships, but only if they land well. Boxes deemed too generic or unremarkable often fail to earn individual features, instead being lumped into compilation posts or ignored entirely.
Brands must strike a balance between creativity and restraint, ensuring packaging is interactive and on-brand without being excessive or wasteful. The goal is to create a shareable moment that feels authentic, not forced.
