‘Beast of Reincarnation’ Launches With Ghibli-Inspired Post-Apocalyptic World
Game Freak's new action RPG, Beast of Reincarnation, is out now on consoles and PC, trading Pokémon's colorful arenas for a haunting post-apocalyptic Japan.
Directed by Kota Furushima, a veteran of Pokémon's battle system, the game dropped on August 4. It casts players as Emma the Sealer, who roams a ruined natural world with her giant magical dog companion, Koo.
The setting marks a shift from the cheerful Paldea region to a “hauntingly beautiful” wasteland that was once Japan. The mission: hunt down a corrupted monster in an industrialized landscape.
Furushima's Pokémon pedigree shows in creature designs and the combat, which blends turn-based strategy with real-time action. Koo wields nature-based elemental abilities capable of stunning and damaging enemies, adding tactical depth to fast-paced fights.
Critics have already drawn comparisons to NieR: Automata and Princess Mononoke, particularly for the narrative and aesthetic. The dynamic between a fierce heroine and a massive wolf companion echoes the relationship between San and Moro.
The release signals Game Freak's expansion beyond its long-running Pokémon franchise, tackling a darker, more mature story in a visually striking package.
