Atoms brings former Uber finance chief Gautam Gupta aboard as CFO

Gautam Gupta announced on Wednesday that he has joined Atoms, the robotics and industrial AI company founded by Travis Kalanick, as chief financial officer. Gupta spent more than four years at Uber, serving as its finance chief under Kalanick before departing in July 2017, weeks after Kalanick resigned as CEO.

The hire is the latest in a pattern of Kalanick bringing former Uber colleagues into Atoms, which was previously known as CloudKitchens. Earlier this year, Atoms acquired mining autonomy startup Pronto, led by ex-Uber and ex-Google self-driving engineer Anthony Levandowski. Several other former top Uber employees now work at Atoms, according to LinkedIn.

The appointment comes just weeks after Atoms secured $1.7 billion in funding. Kalanick described the round as “unfinished business” in a post last month, saying it provides fuel to complete the “bits-to-atoms story arc” started at Uber and continued at CloudKitchens. Uber itself participated in the funding round, though it has not disclosed its contribution.
