Xiaomi Unveils 18 Fold, Its Priciest Phone Yet, Backed by 80,000 Drop Tests
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun introduced the Xiaomi 18 Fold at the brand's most ambitious launch to date, pairing a starting price of RMB 10,999 with a display of destroyed engineering prototypes used to prove the device's durability.
During the unveiling, Lei Jun presented a slide he called the "graveyard of folding phones," showing a collection of engineering test units that had been dropped and wrecked while the company refined the handset's ultra-durable design. The team destroyed more than 1,500 test units and ran over 80,000 drop tests in total.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold starts at RMB 10,999, with a ceramic limited edition reaching RMB 15,999, making it the company's most expensive and most ambitious release so far.
Beyond the durability claims, the device carries a new-generation Xuanjie O3 chip, a 6000mAh battery and a Leica optical setup built around a 200MP main camera, along with dual-screen live shooting capability.
The launch leans on transparency rather than pricing alone. For Chinese tech enthusiasts, who increasingly treat smartphones as an extension of personal style and status, the prototype showcase reframes the conversation around hard-earned durability rather than luxury positioning.
