Patricia de Nicolaï to Receive ScentXplore Lifetime Honor as Nicolaï Paris Enters Neiman Marcus
The perfumer and great-granddaughter of Guerlain's founder will be recognized at ScentXplore on Nov. 7, the same season her self-funded label Nicolaï Paris makes its U.S. debut at Neiman Marcus.
Patricia de Nicolaï, who founded Nicolaï Paris with her husband, Jean-Louis Michau, in 1989, will collect the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual niche perfume convention ScentXplore on Nov. 7. The honor arrives as her brand prepares to enter Neiman Marcus this fall, its first stated move into the U.S. market.
Nearly four decades on, Nicolaï Paris remains self-funded and family-operated, a rarity among fragrance houses and one of the earliest labels built around a perfumer's own name. De Nicolaï described her guiding ambition in simple terms: "I wanted to make elegant, rich perfumes."
Her pedigree runs through the Guerlain dynasty. She is the great-granddaughter of Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, who founded the Paris house, and she grew up surrounded by its scents. "It was everywhere — [my family] used it in the house, on their skin, perfumes — it was impossible to smell something different from other brands," she said.
Yet that lineage did not map neatly onto a career path. De Nicolaï noted that her connection to the Guerlain family descends through women while the company was run by men, with neither her grandmother nor her mother working in the business.
The trajectory she built instead — a perfumer-led independent house with a forthcoming American retail foothold — is the one now being celebrated by the niche fragrance community at ScentXplore's annual gathering.
