Osmo Launches Auction for AI-Developed Fragrance Molecules

Osmo is auctioning exclusive, perpetual licenses to 10 proprietary fragrance ingredients created with artificial intelligence, opening up traditionally closed R&D to outside buyers.

Osmo, an olfactory technology company, is holding an auction for 10 fragrance ingredients developed using its artificial intelligence platform. The event marks a departure from the fragrance industry's usual closed innovation model, where molecule development is kept internal and often takes years and millions of dollars.

Interested buyers, including fragrance houses, consumer packaged goods companies, and chemical manufacturers with in-house perfumery capabilities, can evaluate specific captives and request samples. A 12-week diligence period will precede binding bids.

The auction will officially debut at the World Perfumery Congress in Monterey, California, on June 23. There, industry players will compete for the exclusive, perpetual licenses through an open, competitive process.

“When the industry has better ingredients, everyone benefits,” said Mike Rytokoski, Senior Vice President at Osmo, in a statement. He added that the company originally created the molecules for its own use but decided to license them to larger companies for broader consumer access.

Historically, introducing new fragrance ingredients has been a slow and costly process with no guarantee of success, leading to decades of stagnation. Osmo’s auction model aims to accelerate innovation by granting brands immediate access to novel, AI-generated scent molecules.
