Oliveda Eyes Nasdaq, Paul Mitchell Lands at Sephora, Based Bodyworks Shines at Target: Indie Beauty Roundup

A legal dispute over HoliFrog, strategic options for Virtue Labs, and a rapid Target sell-through for Based Bodyworks headline this week's indie beauty news, alongside Oliveda's Nasdaq plans and Paul Mitchell's Sephora debut.

HoliFrog is facing a legal challenge following its February sale. Former owner Seemark Brands and co-founders Emily Parr and Majeed Hemmat filed a complaint on May 13 after the buyer threatened to unwind the deal, citing a sharp decline in sales to a major customer group after the acquisition. The sellers dispute the claims, calling the situation buyer's remorse.

The case is being heard in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Corporate records name Holly Ceplikas, a former investor at Propel Equity and Essex Bay Capital and current co-owner of Parzona LLC, as organizer and director of HoliFrog, Inc. Parr and Hemmat also run skincare brand Current State.

Separately, Virtue Labs has reportedly brought on J.P. Morgan to explore strategic options, per industry sources. The company declined to comment, with a spokesperson saying: "We are aware of the interest in Virtue, but we do not comment on market speculation regarding strategic matters." Combe, which owns Just For Men and Vagisil, acquired a majority stake in Virtue Labs in 2020 and increased its ownership in 2023. Any potential deal would continue a busy stretch for haircare M&A, following acquisitions of Color Wow and Not Your Mother's and investments in Roz, KilgourMD, and Filament.

Based Bodyworks, founded by barber and content creator Lance Baker, made a strong Target debut. Launching in about 2,000 Target stores on July 5, the TikTok-famous brand sold through 70% of its inventory in the first week.

Elsewhere in indie beauty, Oliveda is reportedly pursuing a Nasdaq listing, and Paul Mitchell products have become available at Sephora, adding to the sector's momentum.
