Hong Kong’s Everyday Icons Reborn as Playful Mecha in New Show
Local artist Felix Ip transforms familiar Hong Kong sights—from herbal tea shops to neon signs—into chunky sci-fi robots at an exhibition running through September 20 at Pioneer Centre.
Opening earlier this summer, the Hong Kong Heavy Gear & Taste of Hong Kong Nostalgia Exhibition is turning city landmarks into larger-than-life characters. The show, on view through September 20 at Pioneer Centre, offers a whimsical remix of local heritage.
One centerpiece is a traditional herbal tea urn reimagined as a copper robot, complete with lion-dog motifs on its shoulders and bold Chinese characters across its frame. Visitors have been stopping for selfies with the mechanical twist on a drink usually associated with bitterness and health.
Another section celebrates Hong Kong’s neon legacy. Glowing signs in blues, purples, and yellows layer familiar Cantonese phrases and street-style fonts, capturing the look of old-school Nathan Road as an indoor light display.
The overall atmosphere is playful and nostalgic, inviting families and friends to engage with local history in a toy-like setting. The installations are designed to make heritage feel less like a textbook and more like a comic universe.
