Hollywood stars turn to microdrama apps as short-form series boom
A growing number of Hollywood celebrities are investing in or starring in microdramas, the short mobile phone series that have become a fast-growing entertainment format. US revenue from the sector is projected to hit $1.5 billion this year.
Microdramas are compact scripted series made for mobile viewing, with episodes lasting just a few minutes. They typically rely on melodramatic plots, sudden twists, and cliffhangers to encourage viewers to pay for the next installment.
The format first gained momentum in China before spreading to international audiences. Market researcher Omdia forecasts that US revenue from microdramas will reach $1.5 billion in 2026.
Several apps have moved in to capture the demand, including ReelShort and DramaBox. TikTok also entered the race earlier this year with its own app, PineDrama.
Hollywood talent is now getting involved, either by starring in new series, founding their own production companies, or backing existing platforms. The shift comes as film studios seek cheaper and faster content production and many industry professionals face a slow market.
Meanwhile, short-form video on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts continues to pull viewer attention, making microdramas an increasingly attractive business for both creators and investors.
