Guernsey Keeps Duty-Free Allowances Unchanged After Budget Review
The States of Guernsey has decided against altering its duty-free allowance regime following a review, a move welcomed by the UK Travel Retail Forum as a boost for tourism and transport links.
The Policy and Resources Committee carried out the review of duty-free allowances, which had been announced in the 2026 Budget, and concluded that the existing rules should stay in place.
The UK Travel Retail Forum said the decision removes a threat to the island's transport connections and its tourism sector. The body's chair, Nigel Keal, described the outcome as a win for both visitors and islanders.
During the review, UKTRF and its members engaged with the States of Guernsey, arguing that duty-free tourism supports the wider Guernsey economy and helps underpin the viability of air and sea services serving the self-governing British Crown Dependency.
Those arguments were acknowledged by the committee in its Budget report, according to a UKTRF statement. The committee said it reached its conclusion after hearing from the forum and other experts.
Keal credited industry-wide cooperation for the result, saying it demonstrated what can be achieved by working together and underlined the importance of the duty-free sector to Guernsey's tourism, connectivity and economy.
