Google Wins Spirit Airlines Data in Bankruptcy Sale for $10 Million
Google won a bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines' business data and software code for $10 million, and plans to use the assets to improve its AI models and products.
Google's winning bid was disclosed in a court filing dated August 14, giving the tech giant access to a vast array of Spirit Airlines' operational and business data. The $10 million acquisition includes data from the carrier's finance and accounting, operations, and revenue management systems, along with its software code.
The purchased assets contain roughly 3.4 million payroll records, 100 million emails, and 80,000 email accounts, as well as employee data going back to 1986. The scope of the data also extends to Spirit's pricing models, booking curves, flight behavior information, and records of inflight purchases and Wi-Fi sales.
Additional data sets cover refund histories and travel package information, giving Google a comprehensive view of the airline's commercial operations. The filing did not detail how the data would be integrated, but Google's intention is to use the troves to enhance its artificial intelligence models and products.
The sale comes as part of Spirit Airlines' ongoing bankruptcy proceedings, with the court approving the sale of these non-core assets. For Google, the acquisition provides a unique and large-scale dataset from a major U.S. low-cost carrier, offering potential insights into pricing, customer behavior, and operational patterns.
