Global After-Sun Market Surges 30% as Post-Sun Care Goes Beyond Aloe

The after-sun category is undergoing a transformation from basic aloe gels to sophisticated skin repair and barrier support products. According to Euromonitor International, the global after-sun market surged 30% in retail value terms between 2020 and 2025, reaching $884 million. While still a fraction of the broader suncare market—worth $18 billion in 2025 and up 58% since 2020—after-sun care is gaining momentum.

Consumer awareness of cumulative sun damage beyond sunburn is fueling growth. Michael Nolte, SVP Creative Director at global trend insights platform Beautystreams, noted that consumers increasingly recognize sun exposure as a contributor to visible aging, pigmentation, dehydration, sensitivity, and loss of skin resilience.

Despite the uptick, new product launches in the after-sun segment remain scarce, accounting for just 5% of global suncare launches in 2025, per Mintel. The category has long been dominated by a small selection of aloe gels, lotions, and burn creams sold alongside a vast array of sunscreens.

Industry experts see an opportunity for innovative startups and forward-looking brands to redefine post-sun care. The rise of longevity-focused lifestyles and a desire for everyday recovery after UV exposure are driving interest in more advanced formulations.

As the market evolves, after-sun care is poised to become a significant subsegment within the broader skincare industry, with potential for disruption similar to other niche beauty categories.
