Duolingo Launches Shanghainese Course With 50 Units
Duolingo has added Shanghainese to its platform after more than a year of preparation, making the Chinese dialect its second on the app. The 50-unit course covers everyday situations and local expressions.
The course went live last month and spans 50 units focused on daily situations and expressions used in the dialect. Duolingo described the launch as a way to turn a local dialect into a playful cultural experience.
The app is positioning the lessons for younger learners, drawing on content tied to modern city life and familiar social situations rather than the style of traditional textbooks, which can feel rigid or outdated.
Shanghainese is now the second Chinese dialect available on Duolingo. The company spent more than a year preparing the course before releasing it.
The launch addresses a common gap for younger speakers and family members who may not understand the dialect spoken by parents or grandparents.
