Cloudflare unveils Kitesurf, a cloud browser tailored for AI agents

The internet infrastructure provider said the new browser is built for software agents that need to navigate websites, fill out forms, and complete other tasks on behalf of users. Unlike traditional browsers, Kitesurf does not prioritize visual features like themes, tabs, or extensions, according to Cloudflare's announcement.

Instead, the browser is engineered around the needs of AI systems, including context window management, performance, token costs, and scalability. Cloudflare also noted that an AI-focused browser faces a different threat model, with potential vulnerabilities such as prompt injection attacks.

Kitesurf runs entirely on Cloudflare's serverless platform, Workers, and the company said it decided to build the product just 12 weeks ago. The browser consumes less computing power than Chromium for common automation tasks, making it a more efficient option for developers.

The launch positions Cloudflare as the latest player in the race to build a new kind of web browser, though its target is developers creating AI agents rather than consumers seeking a Chrome alternative. As AI software shifts from answering questions to completing actions, browsers are becoming a critical interface for these agents to interact with the web as humans do.
